"Defensive" Meat Eaters ~ By Eric Glass

Hey Rick,

I just got an e-mail from Mike and remembered that I failed to reply to your previous message (after I promised not to do so -arrgh) So sorry.

Actually my excuse is that after I read through your website (which I enjoyed quite a bit) I was toying with composing a more thoughouh response to the food and drink portion of the site, in the hopes of presenting a more cogent position for "defensive meat eaters". Of course I promptly forgot. Anyway I have a lot to say about food in america these days but for the course of brevity and lazyness I will just make two points:

1. I've gotten the vegetarian eye-roll bit many a time in the past few years, and I'll take it from vegans (maybe), but I don't want to hear anything regarding the evils of meat comsuption (in terms of either dietary heathiness, modern farming techniques or processed foods) from anybody who eats cheese and eggs, to say nothing of vegitarian corn dogs (these are real).

2. Don't lose hope regarding the future of the american diet, in some ways things are getting worse (as any trip to the supermarket frozen 'foods' section will reveal), but they are also getting better; there is a legitimate increse in the interest of quality eating including small farm and organic fare, I think we may be seeing the high tide mark for the golden arches (at least in the U.S.). The recent surge in vegitarianism is valid (if somewhat misguided) evidence of this.

On the subjebt of food - the bottle of beer you gave me in Dec lasted all but a few hours and it was delicious (better then I remembered). I actually shared some with my dad who was equally impresed, which was suprising as he usally does not go for the more bitter styles of stout (allthough I do).

Oh well its my bedtime,

Eric G.
